Food Beyond the Plate Manifesto: for a food system that nourishes all life

natashasstraker

This is a moment of possibility, and each one of us holds the power to shape a Kenyan food future that nourishes all life. Every choice we make, every meal we prepare, every conscious bite we take is a statement of who we are and the world we want to live in. We are not passive consumers - our daily actions, thoughts and beliefs create ripples of change. Together, we can rediscover food as a force of vitality, purpose, and connection in our lives and shared futures!

Imagine a world where our food is more than just sustenance—where it’s a vibrant life source connecting us to the earth, to one another, and to our deeper selves. In this vision, our choices are not dictated by trends but are reflections of our values, honouring the richness of our heritage, and the rhythms of nature. Kenya’s food culture, rich in biodiversity and resilience, encourages us to reconnect with our roots, embracing food that nourishes us fully and renews our relationship with the earth that sustains us.

The current food system, with its industrial and commodified character, has become increasingly disconnected from the wellbeing of people and the planet. Prioritizing quantity over nourishment, it has brought addictive cheap calories to our tables but often at a hidden cost to our health. Chronic health issues are rising, both globally and here in Kenya, as a result of poor-quality, nutrient-depleted food. Our health is paying the price for a system that has strayed too far from food’s true purpose: to nourish and enliven us.

Now is the time to reclaim the power of food to heal and restore. A food culture rooted in nutrient density, biodiversity, and cultural respect is the key to bringing vitality back to our lives. By choosing foods that are alive - grown in rich, biodiverse soils, full of nutrients, and in harmony with nature - we can build a healthier, more resilient future. One that has our ‘whole-istic’ health at its core; and that appreciates food as the sacred life force to support mental and physical health. It is possible to shape a food future that gives us access to healthy and nutritious food whilst also sustaining a wider web of life.

We believe that every shilling spent is a choice about how we care for ourselves and our communities. How we spend our food budget tangibly shapes our food future. Making diverse, nutritious food choices that support local farmers and regenerate soils reinforces a food culture that values well-being over profit, community over convenience, and balance over excess. Remember every bite we take can bring us closer to a life of good health, connection and equality; empowering us to live our fullest lives.

Food Beyond the Plate is an awareness-based movement of people, from all walks of life, reclaiming their right to live well. Living well means eating well, and it also means changing how we view ourselves in relation to nature - remembering that we are part of nature, not dominant over her. This movement is here to help our community members to craft behaviours and mindsets that are better aligned with this regenerative paradigm. Ones that pay greater attention to the complexity and uncertainty that makes the world we live in so magnificent. As we learn to let go of control of what we thought we once knew we may find a sense of relief and a renewed energy for our collective action.

Our values:

  • Oneness: Recognising the complex web of relationships between food, people, and the ecosystems that sustain us

  • Awareness: Encouraging conscious choices that consider the ripple effects of our food on the earth, our health, and each other

  • Creativity: Celebrating the diverse ways we can reimagine and cultivate a more regenerative, nourishing food future that supports collective health

  • Collaborative Growth: Nurturing a community that flourishes through mutual support, education and shared learning, inspiring actions that reconnect us

How we support you:

  • Creating Awareness: Evoking curiosity, creativity and attention in our everyday interactions with food and each other

  • Instilling Belief: Conscious activities, workshops, and partnerships designed to nurture our inner capacities for change

  • Collective Learning: Sharing resources designed from ancient wisdom repurposed for modern living to support this transition

  • Collaborative Action: Convening different voices with different lived experiences, perspectives and interests to learn from one and another and take collaborative action

Ultimately, this awareness-based movement is about feeling great, enjoying food and owning your health! We are responsible for how we feel based on what we feed our bodies with. By joining Food Beyond the Plate you can reconnect with where and how your food is grown and made, better understand what good food means and become part of a community that is participating in positively changing the physical farming landscape through our choices.

How will you rediscover your deeper relationship with food and join us on this transformative journey?
